4 Important Reasons Why You Need To Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Home / Archives for Dermatologist

As summer encroaches upon us, sunscreens flood the store shelves. Many people know that you need sunscreen if you’re going to be spending a day at the beach or hiking in broad daylight, but many people don’t realize that you need to wear sunscreen every day. There are all sorts of myths about sunscreen that cause people to think they don’t need to wear it on the daily, such as if you have darker skin, you don’t need it, or if it’s cloudy or you’re going to spend the day inside, you don’t need it either.

However, everyone, regardless of skin tone, needs to wear sunscreen every day. Yes, this is true even if it’s cloudy or you’re not going outside. Sun exposure can cause all sorts of problems from premature aging to sunburns to skin cancer. Sunscreen protects your skin and helps keep you healthy. Here are some of the key reasons why you need to wear sunscreen every day.

#1. It Reduces Your Risk Of Developing Skin Cancer

wear sunscreen every day

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, affecting approximately 1 in 5 people. If you wear sunscreen everyday, you can decrease your risk of developing skin cancer, since ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer. While you can’t avoid UV rays, sunscreen offers protection that can block them.

While skin cancer is more common in people with light skin, people who have darker skin tend to get more serious types of skin cancer. This is especially true since skin cancer tends to go undetected in people with darker skin tones until it is further along, and thus, harder to treat. Ergo, regardless of your skin tone, you should be wearing sunscreen every day in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Sunscreen can help to reduce your risk of melanoma by 50%.

Since skin cancer is so common, it’s recommended that you get familiar with your skin so that you can detect any suspicious-looking moles or skin abnormalities early on. You can conduct a self-examination every month, and then if you do spot something suspicious, your dermatologist will be able to screen you and conduct a thorough examination.

#2. It Helps To Prevent Premature Aging

wear sunscreen every day

There are countless different skin care products on the market that claim to help with aging skin, and yet, one of the best things you can do in order to prevent premature aging is to wear sunscreen every day. This is because sun exposure can result in damaged skin and break down the collagen and elastin in your skin which help your skin maintain its elasticity and lift.

Sunscreen helps to protect your skin’s collagen and elastin levels, which helps you avoid over 80% of the signs of aging such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Dryness
  • Sagginess
  • Roughness
  • Skin discoloration (such as sunspots, hyper pigmentation, and the like)

This is why you should wear sunscreen every day, even if it’s overcast or you’re going to be spending the day inside. UV rays can still penetrate through clouds and windows, which means that even if it’s cloudy and you’re in your room, you can still get sun damaged skin. Even if you don’t get sunburnt, your skin can still be damaged by the sun, so you should wear sunscreen every day.

#3. It Prevents Sunburn

wear sunscreen every day

Even on a cloudy day, you can still get sunburnt. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time out in the sun, your risk of getting a sunburn goes up even higher. Sunburns can be incredibly painful and result in lasting skin damage, such as premature aging, melanoma, discoloration, and more. Through ensuring that you wear sunscreen every day, you can protect yourself from getting sunburnt.

It’s recommended that you apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and that you reapply it every 2 hours, especially if you’re going to be out in the sun all day. If you’re spending time in the water, you want to reapply your sunscreen after getting out. While some sunscreens are water resistant for a certain amount of time, usually 40-80 minutes, a waterproof sunscreen has yet to be invented. Thus, in order to keep your skin protected, you need to reapply your sunscreen accordingly.

#4. It Decreases Inflammation

Sun exposure doesn’t just put you at risk of sunburn, it can also cause inflammation, which can be especially challenging for people with skin conditions such as rosacea or psoriasis. If you wear sunscreen every day, you can decrease your risk of skin inflammation, especially if you use a sunscreen with gentle ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. If you struggle to find a sunscreen that works with your skin, your dermatologist can help you.

Pimples can appear at the most inconvenient times. The last thing you want is to wake up the morning of an important job interview or to be getting ready for a date only to find pimples staring right back at you in the mirror. Sure, everyone says that popping pimples is bad for your skin, but just this once can’t hurt, right? Besides, how is it that popping pimples is bad for your skin when doing so seems to instantly get rid of the pus? Doesn’t it seem like popping pimples is a good thing, the quick and easy way to get rid of those annoying blemishes?

popping pimples is bad for your skin

Unfortunate as it is, especially for those of you who enjoy popping pimples, yes, it really is bad for your skin, and yes, it really can hurt you in the long run. Here’s what you need to know about why popping pimples is bad for your skin and what you should do the next time an annoying intruder appears on your face.

Why Is Popping Pimples Bad For Your Skin?

Tempting as popping pimples can be, especially if you have a whitehead, doing so can actually cause more skin problems. We get it – popping pimples seems like it solves the problem instantly while if you waited for it to go away on its own, it would take anywhere from 3-7 entire days. However, rather than serving as a quick and easy solution to your pimple problem, you could end up increasing redness and infection and even causing scarring.

This is because you’re interfering with your body’s natural healing process and can end up pushing the infection deeper into your skin and spreading bacteria. Pimples occur when excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells get trapped inside your pores. This causes them to swell. When you squeeze a pimple in order to pop it, you can end up forcing that excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells deeper into your follicle. If said follicle wall ruptures, then all of that infection ends up spilling into your skin, which can cause even more infection than there was before.

Have you ever popped a pimple and then noticed within a few hours that the spot where it was is redder and more inflamed than it was before? Perhaps you’ve noticed more pimples forming around the general area where the initial one that you popped was? This is because of the break in your skin’s structure and increased inflammation that resulted from the initial popping.

Not only is popping pimples bad for your skin because it can cause further infection and lead to the formation of even more pimples, but it can also cause your skin to scar or develop dark marks. Every time you pop a pimple, you risk the chance of losing tissue and getting acne scars.

So, in summary, popping pimples is bad for your skin because it can lead to:

  • Permanent acne scars
  • Skin discoloration
  • Worsened, more noticeable acne
  • More painful acne (especially if you tried to pop cystic acne – ouch!)
  • Infection

Is It Ever Safe To Pop A Pimple?

If you go to a dermatologist to have them professionally pop or inject your pimple in a sterile environment with professional tools, then yes – it can indeed be safe to pop a pimple. Dermatologists have the knowledge, experience, and equipment necessary to be able to pop a pimple or inject it so that it goes away without causing extensive damage to your skin.

For yourself, though? Popping a pimple every once in a while won’t kill you – everyone’s done it. However, no, it is never a good idea to try to pop a pimple yourself, as it can worsen the problem and lead to even more skin issues, such as the acne scarring we mentioned earlier. Hence all the warnings about why popping pimples is bad for your skin.

What To Do Instead Of Popping A Pimple

popping pimples is bad for your skin

So, popping pimples is bad for your skin. But is there anything you can do yourself in order to diminish their appearance or make them go away faster? You’ll be relieved to hear that yes, there are in fact things you can do to calm pimples down. We know how aggravating it can be to wait out the 3-7 days it can take for pimples to go away on their own, however, a little patience pays off in the long run, because you don’t have to worry about all the ways in which popping pimples is bad for your skin – like even more pimples when you initially only had the one.

Instead of popping that pimple, we recommend:

  • Apply a warm or cold compress
  • Apply an acne spot treatment
  • Use non-comedogenic products in your skincare and makeup routine
  • Consult with your dermatologist

Spring is almost here and that means you need to, not only prepare your garden and do some spring cleaning, but also you need to prepare your skin. All winter you’ve been putting on your moisturizers and creams to keep your skin from getting too dry. Now that spring is here, your skin is definitely ready for a shift in seasonal skin care. It’s time to get your healthy glowing skin.

Moisturizer

Heat and humidity increase oily skin. The moisturizer you relied on to beat the winter dryness is likely going to be too heavy for your skin now. In the spring and summer, our skin naturally produces more oil and retains moisture better than in the winter. Still, you should keep using a moisturizer, just not one that is so heavy. A lightweight moisturizer that absorbs quickly and delivers skin-smoothing ingredients should give you that summer glow. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, and marine algae.

Cleanser

Instead of using a thick cleanser to boost your dry skin for the winter, go for something more lightweight like a gel formula for spring. An oil-removing cleanser can help control the excess oils during the hottest times of the year. You can try Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser to control the oils in your skin while also giving you a refreshing glow.

Sunscreen

We all know sunscreen is the key to healthy skin. Some of us only use it when spending a day at the beach, but sunscreen should be a regular part of your skincare routine. Even if you are outside for a short period of time, UV rays can still create dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles. So it’s really important to have sunscreen on your skincare routine for the summer and winter months. Whether it’s a moisturizer with SPF or light sunscreen that won’t clog your pores, you need to make sure you are always protecting your skin with sunscreen.

Exfoliate

A gentle exfoliation will remove dry, dead skin, especially when you want that summer glow. There are many ways to do an exfoliation on your skin like scrubs, peels, and tools to give you refreshing, clean summer skin. Exfoliating your skin once or twice a week is usually enough for most skin types. Be mindful when you exfoliate your skin that it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which in turn can burn your skin easier. Try L’Oreal Paris Pure Sugar face Scrub to get you started.

Serum

A serum penetrates deeply into your skin, locking in moisture. You don’t need to completely opt out of serums for the spring and summer months, but we would recommend going for a more water-based serum instead. We need to let our skin breathe and getting a water-based serum will still give you the same benefits without the added weight.

Overall you don’t need to fully change your skincare routine during the changing seasons. A lighter skincare treatment will do the trick. Your skin will still get the moisture and cleanliness that it needs and provide you with the summer glow you’ve always wanted.
