9 Harmful Skincare Mistakes You’re Probably Making

Home / Archives for allentaintor

Skincare is something we typically learn about from those around us. If no one in your family paid attention to skincare and all you knew was to put on sunscreen in the summer, the world of skincare can seem intimidating. Even if you and your friends love staying on top of the latest skincare, you could still end up making harmful skincare mistakes.

Many people don’t even know that some of these mistakes are a problem or even possible. Without further ado, here are some skincare mistakes you’re probably making that could affect your skin.

skincare mistakes

#1. Sleeping With Makeup On

Whether you were out partying until the early hours of the morning, you had an exhausting workday, or you’re just feeling lazy, it can be easy to hit the sack without taking your makeup off. Perhaps you even think it’s a win: future you won’t have to do their makeup tomorrow because you can just touch up last night’s!

However, sleeping with your makeup on clogs your pores, which can cause acne. It also makes you more susceptible to premature aging, due to the fact that your skin is left exposed to bacteria all night long. Even if you’re exhausted, taking a couple of minutes to remove your makeup helps your skin stay clear and youthful for longer.

#2. Forgetting That You Can Have Too Much Of A Good Thing

Do you have a pimple you’re desperate to get rid of? Maybe you have a fine line on your forehead and you want it to disappear? Perhaps you think slathering layer after layer of a product over your problem areas will make them look better faster.

It’s a common skincare mistake. However, you can have too much of a good thing. Using too much of a product won’t make your skin look better sooner. It’s just a waste of product, and can even negatively affect your skin. For instance, if you struggle with pilling, this could be because you’re using too much.

#3. Not Cleansing Your Skin

You may think all you really need is moisturizer and sunscreen and you’re good to go. Or maybe you think you only need to wash your face in the morning or only at night. However, you should be washing your face day and night. You don’t want to overdo it, of course, as washing your skin too often could dry it out.

Washing your face at night removes leftover sunscreen and any dirt and oils that built up on your skin during the day. Washing your face in the morning removes the sweat from while you were sleeping (yes, we sweat when we sleep!), as well as any oil and impurities from your bedding.

#4. Applying Products In The Wrong Order

Many people make the skincare mistake of applying products in the wrong order. You can usually tell when you’re doing this, as the products won’t work well together or you may struggle with pilling. In order to ensure that everything soaks in, you want to go from lightest to heaviest. So, serums before creams, water-based products before oil-based products.

It also helps to give each product time to soak in before you jump into the next step of your routine. If you apply one product right after another, you could still end up feeling like they’re on top of your skin, rather than helping it. Simply taking a minute or two between steps can make the products more effective.

#5. Rubbing Product In Instead Of Patting It On

Did you know that rubbing your face can lead to premature aging? Many people make the skincare mistake of rubbing products in instead of patting them on. It’s easy to make, as this isn’t something that you immediately see the effects of. However, in time, this causes friction and stretches out the skin, leaking to wrinkles and sagging.

Patting is gentler on your skin. It also helps you to avoid using too much product. When you rub skincare on instead of patting it in, it takes product away from your face, which can be a waste.

#6. Skipping The Sunscreen

wear sunscreen every day

One of the most common skincare mistakes people make is skipping sunscreen. People generally believe that you only need sunscreen if you’re going to be out hiking or on a beach. People also think that only people with fair skin need to put sunscreen on since they burn.

However, you should be wearing sunscreen every day, even if it’s overcast and you’re not going outside, even if you have darker skin. This is because cloudy or not, UV rays can still reach your skin. To prevent premature aging and the risk of skin conditions like skin cancer, ensure that you always wear sunscreen.

#7. Letting Skincare Products Expire

Like makeup, many people don’t realize that skincare can expire. How long have you been holding onto that sunscreen? In general, unopened products have a shelf life of anywhere from 1 to 3 years. Most opened skincare expires within a year and loses its effectiveness.

How long your skincare lasts depends on how it’s stored, too. You need to be careful storing products with Vitamin C, for example, as it can oxidize.

#8. Dialing Back When You See Results

It can be oh-so-tempting to assume that once you see results, this means you can stop doing what you were doing. It happens with medications, with many a psychiatrist pleading with their patients to please continue taking their medication even if they feel fine. It happens with skincare, too.

Of course, this depends on what treatments you were using and why. You wouldn’t continue to use spot treatments if you don’t have pimples, after all. Your dermatologist will be able to help you determine what you should and should not be doing for your skin to keep it healthy.

#9. Not Seeking The Advice Of Skincare Experts

One of the most common skincare mistakes people make is not going to a dermatologist or skincare expert. Instead, they end up wasting money trying all these different products in order to figure out what works and what doesn’t. A dermatologist will be able to tell you what your skin needs and provide you with specific recommendations.

If you struggle with acne, you’re probably doing everything in your power to treat it, from over-the-counter spot treatments to utilizing natural methods like tea tree oil to using prescription treatments from your dermatologist. One thing that pops up again and again when trying to treat acne is the idea of an acne face map.

People believe that an acne face map can tell them what is causing their acne and what they need to do to treat it. However, this depends on what type of face map you use. It’s always important to remember that everyone is different, so what causes acne for one person may not cause it in another.

As such, if you ever want to know the true cause of your acne, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist, as they will be able to provide you with specific information related to your unique situation.

That said, here is what you need to know about the acne face map and whether or not you should trust it.

What Is The Acne Face Map?

The idea of face mapping stems from China and has been in use for over 3000 years. The idea of it is that your internal organs are connected to different parts of your face. Thus, if you have acne or dryness or redness in one part of your face, you may have a problem with one of your organs.

There isn’t the research needed in order to back this idea. However, some of it holds up to dermatological practices and what is known about acne.

Here is what the acne face map claims about the skin on your face and its connections to your organs.

  • Forehead. If you have forehead breakouts, this is supposedly connected to your liver and digestive system.
  • Nose. Acne on the nose, like blackheads, is said to be connected to your heart.
  • Cheeks. If you have acne on your cheeks, this points to your stomach and respiratory system.
  • Jawline. This is linked to reproductive or hormonal problems, and is part of this acne face map that holds up to modern research.

There is a lack of controlled studies and adequate research in order to prove that this is accurate or helpful.

In short, this type of acne face map is more of a pseudoscience than anything else.

Do Dermatologists Use The Acne Face Map?

As a way to diagnose issues within your body? Not necessarily. However, acne on certain parts of your face can give indicators to what is causing it. Science-backed acne treatment methods point to certain causes of acne you can treat on your face.

When you see a dermatologist for acne, they will be able to pinpoint the causes of your acne and how you can treat it.

An acne face map that can give you an idea of what causes your acne (but is not foolproof) is as follows:

  • Forehead. If you have breakouts on your forehead or hairline, this can be because of hair products clogging your pores, oil and grease from your hair, or simply touching your forehead too much.
  • Nose. Blackheads and whiteheads are most common here, and tend to result from excessive oil production.
  • Cheeks. Acne here can result from friction, such as from your pillowcase or holding your phone.
  • Jawline. As mentioned before, this is where the two acne face maps align. Acne on your jawline tends to coincide with hormonal changes, such as period acne.

It’s important to note that everyone is different. This is why the acne face map is not a foolproof method in order to determine the cause of your acne. If you struggle with persistent acne, it’s best to see a dermatologist.

There are indeed cases where acne is connected to another health issue. For instance, some people may find that their acne is worse when they have dairy and then when they have less of it, their skin improves. If you have acne that just doesn’t go away, you could simply be acne-prone, or this could mean that you have an underlying health issue and acne is just a symptom.

This could be where the idea of the acne face map came from in the first place, even if it isn’t a reliable source for getting to the root cause of your acne.

Recipes for skin-boosting smoothies are everywhere. They claim to help your skin glow and clear your acne, which certainly sounds nice. But can a smoothie really improve your skin? Or is it just a marketing strategy?

Here’s what you need to know about whether or not a smoothie can really improve your skin.

In Short, Yes.

A smoothie can indeed improve your skin. In fact, most dermatologists and doctors recommend eating whole foods in order to help your body function its best – and this includes your skin.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. Skin regenerates itself approximately every 28 days. This is why it can take some time to notice results from a change in skincare or diet. What you eat, drink, and put on your skin can impact its overall health and appearance. Good foods nourish your skin and ensure that it’s receiving enough hydration and other nutrients.

In fact, smoothies come as a highly recommended snack due to their many benefits for your overall health, as well as how they can improve your skin.

How Can A Smoothie Improve Your Skin?

It depends on what you put in it! The best thing about smoothies is how customizable they are. You put anything in them from fruits to vegetables to protein powders and more. Hailey Bieber’s viral $17 smoothie even has ingredients like hyaluronic acid and sea moss gel.

Generally speaking, a smoothie can improve your skin by helping you get in 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables in a day. Plant foods have wonderful nutrients that can lower inflammation, protect your skin against harmful exogenous factors, prevent skin disorders and premature skin aging, and more. They also provide your skin with hydration, which promotes elasticity and a clearer, more glowing complexion.

What Should You Put In A Smoothie For Healthy Skin?

smoothies improve your skin

You can adjust a smoothie recipe however you like so that it fits your needs and taste preferences. If you want it to improve your skin, you want to ensure that it has good-for-you ingredients, such as fruits, veggies, and supplements.

Here’s what you need to know about how different smoothie ingredients can improve your skin health.

Fruits

The staple of pretty much every smoothie there is: fruit. Different fruits have different benefits, which you can look into if you want to get specific benefits from your smoothie.

For instance, bananas have potassium, which helps to regulate fluid balance in your body. Strawberries are high in vitamin C, which can brighten and clarify your skin. Avocados give you healthy fats and more supple skin.

Vegetables

These aren’t as popular in smoothies, as they tend towards the savory. But if you put in a little bit, you can get all the benefits while the other smoothie ingredients mask the taste.

Mixing a handful of spinach into your smoothie can give you vitamin A, which moderates oil production. Kale has plenty of fiber and can firm your skin, preventing cellular breakdown. Ginger reduces inflammation and can boost your immune system.

Supplements

Some people also choose to add supplements to their smoothies, such as collagen, protein, and more. These can give you even more benefits. For instance, the hyaluronic acid in the Hailey Bieber smoothie gives your skin more hydration from the inside out.

Flax seeds give you Omega-3 fatty acids which help to moisturize your skin and to keep it thick and supple, so that it is more youthful-looking. Collagen can help older adults enjoy improved skin elasticity.

Nuts

Nuts and nut butters can make your smoothies creamier, tastier, and even better for you than they already are (provided that you don’t have a nut allergy). This is because nuts have healthy fats and antioxidants which fight off skin cell damage, reduce inflammation, and prevent skin aging.

They also have important nutrients, such as protein, which helps to maintain your skin structure.

Can Smoothies Resolve Skin Problems?

Smoothies can certainly improve your skin health. They can help reduce inflammation, prevent aging, clarify your skin, and more. However, if you have persistent skin issues, you will want to see a dermatologist. As good as a healthy diet is for you, you could be the healthiest person in the world and still struggle with skin problems. A healthy diet can’t fix all skin problems, but it can improve your skin health.
